NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion leading scorer T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.) may have been held to only one points, but six of her teammates managed to find their way to the basket for double figure scoring in the No. 15/20 Lady Monarchs' 86-66 win over Virginia Commonwealth Thursday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The Old Dominion win streak continues with the Lady Monarchs, playing the sixth strongest schedule according to CollegeRPI.com, having won their last seven contests and ten of their last eleven games. The Lady Monarchs improved to 13-3 overall and 4-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
The Rams meanwhile were handed their first conference loss and just their second loss overall. Virginia Commonwealth fell to 13-2 overall and 3-1 in league action.
Sophomore Jessica Canady (Williamsburg, Va.) helped lead the bench to 37 points as she lead all Lady Monarch scorers with 15 points. A trio of Lady Monarchs also notched 12 points. Senior Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.) narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards, junior Jazzmin Walters (Norfolk, Va.) added 12 points and eight assists, while senior Shahida William (Newark, N.J.) poured in 12 points and eight rebounds.
Virgina Commonwealth's Krystal Vaughn and Quanitra Hollingsworth both scored their 1,000th career points in the loss. Vaughn led all scorers with 21 points, her seventh 20+ point game of the year. She notched with double-double with a game-high 10 boards for her first double figure points and rebound contest of the season. Hollingsworth poured in 17, including 12 second half points. Vaughn currently stands at 1,015 career points while Hollingsworth has 1,006 under her belt.
It was neck and neck throughout the early part of the first half with the game tied at 20-20 with 7:26 on the clock. A lay-up by La'Tavia Rorie three plays later gave the Rams a 23-22 edge, but it would be the last lead Virginia Commonwealth would see. Green's bucket on the ensuing trip down the court returned the lead to the Lady Monarchs for good as Old Dominion closed out the opening frame outscoring the Rams, 17-5, for a 35-28 advantage at the intermission.
Just as they did against James Madison in the previous game, Old Dominion had an explosive second half, racking up 51 points. Out of the lockerroom, the Lady Monarchs put up 16 points in four mintues while holding Virginia Commonwealth to only two field goals. The 16-4 run was capped by a three-pointer by Canady at the top of the arc, the second straight game the sophomore forward has connected from downtown.
Old Dominion held as much as a 24-point lead with five minutes remaining in the game. The Rams managed to cut their deficit to 15 with 2:37 left.
The No. 15/20 Old Dominion women's basketball team embarks on a three-game road trip. First up for the Lady Monarchs is a trip up Interstate 64 as they head to Williamsburg on Sunday, January 20th for a meeting with the William & Mary Tribe. Tip-off is 2:00 p.m.
