NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Five different Lady Monarchs reached double figure scoring in No. 23 Old Dominion's 80-65 victory over No. 20/21 Vanderbilt Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium in ODU's final non-conference contest. The win improves Old Dominion to 9-3 overall as they get ready to begin its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) slate next.
The Lady Monarchs were led by T.J. Jordan (Portsmouth, Va.) for the eighth time this season. Coming off her game-high 22 points against Kentucky, Jordan netted 15 points all off of three-pointers. Senior Megan Pym (Newfield, N.Y.) added 13, while Jasmine Parker (Norfolk, Va.) came off the bench for 12 points and five assists.
Five-foot two Jazzmin Walters (Norfolk, Va.), the smallest player on the court, was among the top rebounders with seven as Old Dominion outboarded the Commodores, 40-29. Junior Tiffany Green (Chesapeake, Va.) also hauled in a game-high seven as well.
The Lady Monarchs held a 36-28 advantage at the half. With Old Dominion ahead by only one, 29-28, with 1:50 left in the first half, the Lady Monarchs closed out the half on a 7-0 run.
To open the second half, Old Dominion outscored Vanderbilt, 32-12, to stretch its lead to 28 points with just under 10 minutes remaining. The Commodores chipped away at the lead but managed to get no closer than 13 in the game's final minute.
Free throws improved in the game against the Commodores as ODU shot a season second-best 73.1 percent (19-of-26) from the charity stripe. In the first half, the Lady Monarchs shot a blistering 90 percent (9-of-10).
Vanderbilt represented the sixth Top 25 program Old Dominion has faced this season. With the victory, the Lady Monarchs improved to 3-3 on the year against ranked foes.
Additionally it was Old Dominion's first victory over a ranked opponent on the road since a Purdue victory in the 2001-02 season in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
The four-game road swing continues as the 16-time defending conference champion Lady Monarchs enter CAA action. First up for Old Dominion is a trip to Atlanta, Georgia to meet Georgia State on Sunday, January 6th followed by the fourth and final game of the road swing at UNC-Wilmington on Wednesday, January 9th. Old Dominion is 291-16 all-time versus the CAA.
