Shawler Named Pre-Season All-American

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University junior righthander AnthonyShawler (Chesapeake, Va.-Oscar Smith HS) has been named to COLLEGIATEBASEBALL NEWSPAPER/Louisville Slugger pre-season first team All-American andThird team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. As a team, ODU received honorable mention votes for the pre-season top 25. Teammate Dan Hudson joined Shawler on the Brooke Wallacepre-season Watch List for National Player of the Year honors.

Shawler, the CAA's top pitcher in 2007 with an 11-2 record, 2.20 ERA, eightcomplete games, three shutouts and 130 strikeouts in 114.1 innings of work. Shawlerwas named to four All-American teams last year, as well as All-State and All-regionhonors.

ODU compiled a 35-24 overall record in 2007, won the regular season league crown and was the top seed in the CAA tournament. The Monarchs return both first teamAll-CAA pitchers in Shawler and fellow junior righthander Dan Hudson (8-5, 3.46 ERA, 106 So, Princess Anne HS) who ranked second in the CAA to Shawler in strikeouts.

ODU also returns All-Region designated hitter David Burns who led ODU with eight homers, and 61 RBI. The Monarchs welcome back two players who missed last year due to injuries in 2006 All-CAA outfielder and stolen base leader Jimmy Miles (Orlando, FL.), and Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.), a three year starter at firstbase. Miles, a senior hit .348 in 2006 with four homers, 32 RBI and ranked second in the CAA with 39 stolen bases. Cipolla, a senior hit .318 with four homers and 48 RBI in 2006.

ODU also returns starters Chris Keenan (Sr, 278 BA, Great Bridge, HS , Chesapeake, VA.) at second base, Jake McAloose (So. .306 BA, Princess Anne HS, Virginia Beach, VA.).at thirdbase, Gerard Hall (So, .257 BA, Washington, DC.) at shortstop along with starting pitchers Ryan Bergh (Reddick, FL. ) and Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC.).

Joining Shawler on the first team COLLEGIATE BASEBALL All-Americansquad from the CAA was Delaware shortstop Alex Bucholz. Hofstra thirdbasemanMatt Prpkopowicz, George Mason outfielder Scot Krieger were named to the NCBWAAll-American squad with Shawler and Bucholz.

The Monarchs open the 2008 season Feb. 22nd with a three-game home seriesagainst BIGEAST champion Rutgers.
