DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Old Dominion men's swimming and diving team claimed the 2007 Davidison Invitational title and both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams broke eight Davidison Invitational meet records this weekend.
The men's squad took first place with 953 points, 343 points higher than second place College of Charleston (610). Gardner-Webb placed third (554.5), followed by host Davidison in fourth (516.5) and Howard in fifth (182).
The Gardner-Webb women's team won the Davidson Invitational, followed by Old Dominion and Davidson. Team scoring for the women was not available at press time.
Old Dominion set eight new meet records over the weekend led by April Barrientos and Hannah Kess with two on the women's side and Patrik Balint and Kevin Latimer with two new records on the men's side.
April Barrientos reset the 100 back record. Swimming to a time of 57.33, she surpassed the previous time of 58.97 set by Whitney Holley of George Washington in 2004. She also captured a time of 2:04.13 to win the 200 back. Barrientos set a new time that was previously held by Trisha Blackwell of host Davidison from 2004. Additionally, ODU's Hannah Kess finished first in the 200 fly with a meet-record time of 2:07.49, besting junior Alanna Ream's standard of 2:07.71. She also reset the 100 fly record, swimming to a 58.50 time and setting a new standard previously set by Courtney Sanders of host Davidison, who logged a 58.59 in 2005.
Kevin Latimer did the same for the ODU men, setting a new mark of 1:55.00 in the 200 fly and bettering senior Robb Broughton's previous best of 1:56.43 from 2005. He also finished first and set a new meet-record in the 400 IM, with a time of 4:09.52 to better JMU's Brian Freitag's time of 4:09.79 from 2004. Patrik Balint obliterated the previous 200 back record. Finishing in a time of 1:48.38, he reset the former record of 1:54.01 set by Pavel Glowiak of Indiana University of Pennslyvania in 2005. ODU also finished first in a meet-record time of 3:27.49 in the men's 400 medley relay, a team consisting of Patrik Balint, Johan Lundberg, John Dee, and Chad Gangwer, bettering the record of Indiana University of Pennslyvania (3:28.07) from 2005.
In addition to Latimer's and the 400 medley relay squad top times, the Monarchs captured 12 first place times.
Hagg logged two top times for the Monarchs. In the 1650, Kristofer Hagg swam a time of 16:17.96 for first place, while he captured a 4:41.36 time in the 500 free for first place as well.
Hagg would follow up with a second place finish in the 200 free (1:42.00) behind ODU teammate and winner, Patrik Balint. Balint clocked in a time of 1:41.68, just .66 seconds off the meet record set in 2005. Chad Gangwer helped the Monarchs to a one-two-three finish in the event as he took third (1:44.02).
The Monarchs also took a top time another freestyle event. Old Dominion captured one and two in the 100 free. Chad Gangwer won the event in a time of 47.48 while Wesley Murai placed second in a time of 47.52.
Hagg would also go on to finish third in the 400 IM. While Latimer placed first in the event with his record-setting time, he was the first of three Monarchs to hit the wall. Josh Kinas finished behind his Monarch teammate in second (4:12.95).
Balint also won the 100 back, again narrowly missing another Davidson Invitational record. Balint's time in the 100 back of 51.64 was only .46 seconds behind the record set in 2005.
Johan Lundberg captured the 100 breast event hitting the wall in a time of 58.11 as one of three finishers to clock in under a minute. Lundberg would also go on to register a second place finish in the 100 fly (51.67).
While Balint logged a new Davidson Invitational record in the 200 back, his teammate Mikael Ramkvist swam to a second place finish in a time of 1:52.49.
In diving, Noah Scully captured both the 1 meter and 3 meter events. In the 1 meters, Scully posted 300.15 points, recording 92.75 points ahead of second place Brain Etter of ODU (207.40). Third place also went to a Monarch in David Scorup (192.20) The 3 meter also saw the Monarchs capture positions one through four. Scully registered 273.90 points, followed by Scorup (215.90) Etter (205.20), and Stephen Moislein (142.10).
On the women's side, in addition to Barrientos and Kess' two record setting times apiece, the Lady Monarchs recorded six top times in the invitational.
Kelly Sayers placed first in the 100 breast logging a time of 1:07.54 and placed second in the 200 breast with a time of 2:25.67. Sayers was right behind top finisher and fellow Lady Monarch Jennifer Sargent in the event. Sargent collected a time of 2:25.44 in the 200 breast to take home the event.
The 200 medley squad of April Barrientos, Jennifer Sargent, Hanna Kess, and Liza Moiseeva placed second. They clocked a time of 1:50.78.
In diving action, Jasmine Moore took third (215.45) in the 1 meter.
The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams will return to the pool on Saturday, December 1st when they travel to the nation's capital to compete against George Washington.
