NORFOLK, VA--Senior guard Brandon Johnson just missed thetriple double as he helped lead the Monarchs of Old Dominion (2-0) toa 66-35 victory over the Rockets of Toledo Friday night.
ODU jumped out to a 12-2 lead with 13:39 and never really looked back.ODU led by 18, 29-11 at halftime. Toledo cut the lead to 15 at 39-24 with13:11 left, but the Monarchs ran off 15 straight points to make it 56-24with 6:37 left.
Records set tonight: The 35 points is the lowest by an ODU opponent besting the 38 points by VMI on Dec. 12, 2005. The 13 field goals made by Toledo is the fewestby an ODU opponent since DePaul in Dec. 17, 2005.
Sam Harris tied his career high in rebounds with nine as did Brandon Johnsonwith his ten recoveries. Johnson dished out nine assists, scored nine points and cameup with five steals.
Three Monarchs scored in double figures led by Abdi Lidonde and BrianHenderson with 11 points. Henderson, who missed the season opener aftera fainting spell during a class presentation was five-for-10 from the floor and played 19 minutes. Gerald Lee scored ten points and hauled in seven boards.
ODU outrebounded Toledo, 47-38 and shot. 474 (27-57) from the floor.Toledo was .217 (13-60) from the field, another ODU school defensive mark.
The Monarchs return to action on Sunday when they play at Clemson, coachedby ODU Hall of Famer Oliver Purnell. game time is 2 p.m.
