VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The top-seeded Old Dominion field hockey team topped fourth-seeded Northeastern, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) semifinals. The Lady Monarchs will meet second-seeded and defending CAA champion James Madison at the U.S. National Training Center on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as Old Dominion looks to bring home the CAA title for the 14th time in school history.
Sophomore Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N,Y.) scored the game-winning goal in the first half, while classmate Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.) added in two insurance goals in the second half.
Shea's goal came right before intermission at the 33rd minute of the game. On a penalty corner attempt, striker junior Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.) passed the ball into the center of the circle. Shea got her stick on the ball flicking it up and over Northeastern keeper Liz Centofanti for her third game-winner of the season.
Ueberroth scored back-to-back goals within a span of seven minutes midway through the second half with CAA Rookie of the Year Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.) assisting on both. Ueberroth's first goal at the 52nd minute of play came as Hatch passed the ball in from the left side of the cage for a tip in a the right post. Ueberroth's second tally came off a rebound on a penalty corner shot by Smither. For Ueberroth, it was her eighth and ninth goals of the season and is now tied for the lead for the Lady Monarchs in the category.
Old Dominion outshot the Huskies 13-8 and held a slight edge in penalty corners, 6-5.
The victory marked the eighth shutout of the season for the Lady Monarchs and 20th for netminder Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.). Driscoll made seven saves in the cage for the Lady Monarchs, while also Centofanti made seven stops in goal for Northeastern.
James Madison advanced to the championship game following a 3-0 shutout victory over third-seeded Drexel. It will mark the second consecutive season the two teams will battle for the CAA title.
