HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The No. 11 Old Dominion field hockey team took over sole possesion of first place in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over No. 8/9 James Madison.
The victory snaps the Lady Monarchs two-game losing skid and improves the team to 9-7 overall and 6-0 in the CAA with two league games remaining in the regular season. For James Madison, it was only the third loss overall and first conference loss for the Dukes this season. They fall to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in CAA play.
Freshman Loren Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.) registered four points on the afternoon with two goals. Her second goal, the eighth of the season, was her team-leading third game-winner of the year. Additionally, classmate Titia Beek (Heiloo, Holland), who leads the CAA in assists, collected two in the Lady Monarch victory.
While the Dukes struck first and ended the game outshooting (14-6) and outcornering (7-3) the Lady Monarchs, Old Dominion managed to find its way to the back of the James Madison cage within a minute and a half's span late late in the first half and kept the Dukes scoreless in the second half.
Ashley Walls capitalized on a James Madison penalty corner attempt in the 16th minute of the game for the early 1-0 Duke edge. However by halftime, Old Dominion was ahead 2-0. In the 30th minute of action, Hatch tipped in a long pass from sophomore Hanna Warren (Green Lane, Pa.) to get the Lady Monarchs on the scoreboard. One minute and 19 seconds later, Hatch struck again putting Old Dominion ahead for good tipping in a pass from Beek.
Sophomore Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.) added in an insurance goal in the second half. Beek and Ueberroth were both credited with the assists.
Junior Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made seven saves in helping the Lady Monarchs to victory. Additionally senior Sami McLenegan (Middletown, Pa.) recorded her fifth defensive save of the season. James Madison's Kelsey Cutchins made two stops.
