WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Old Dominion swimming and diving teams captured several first place finishes in their first appearance of the 2007-08 season. Hanna Kress paced the Lady Monarch with three individual event victories along with 400 medley relay win that set a pool record at Georgetown. Kress placed first in the 100 free, 100 fly, and 50 free. Josh Kinas paced the Monarchs winning three individual events with taking home top times in the 100 breaststroke , 200 breaststroke and 200 IM.
For the men, Old Dominion won the meet against the Hoyas, 227.5-72.5 while the women won, 177-122, against Georgetown and defeated James Madison 168-127.
The Monarchs got things started with a top finish in the 400 medley relay. The group of Patrik Balint, Mikael Ramkvist, Wesley Murai, and Chad Gangwer placed first swimming their way to a time of 3:31.36. The team finished nearly seven seconds faster than second place group from Georgetown.
Old Dominion also got the job done in the 400 free relay. Patrik Balint, Kristofer Hagg, Mikael Ramkvist, and Johan Lundberg claimed the top spot with a time of 3:12.77, nearly eight seconds faster then the ODU B squad of Jonathan Dee, Chris Plummer, Vicent Pastore, and Austin Brett.
Old Dominion went one, two, three in the both the 200 free, 50 free, and 100 fly. Kristofer Hagg made his ODU debut by taking first (1:46.88) in the 200 free, narrowly edging out his second place teammate Chad Gangwer (1:46.91) and third place teammate Patrik Balint (1:47.33). Gangwer edged out his teammates in the 50 free by touching the wall first in a time of 22.43, 16 hundreths of a second ahead of second place Wesley Murai (22.59). Mikael Ramkvist was just 35 hundreths of a second behind Gangwer and 19 hundreths of a second behind Murai with his 22.78 time. Jonathon Dee took home first place in the 100 fly (53.63), as the Monarchs hit the wall within a second of one another. Kevin Latimer came in second (53.91) and Vincent Pastore placed third (54.41).
The 50 free would not be Gangwer's lone first place finish. The Monarch also won the 100 free as Old Dominion placed all its swimmers in the event in the top four positions. Gangwer finished 100 free in a time of 48.10, followed by Johan Lundberg (49.33), Wesley Murai (50.09), and Vincent Pastore (51.36).
Chris Plummer and Kevin Latimer topped the list of finishers in the 1000 free. Plummer claimed the top finish (10:03.07) five second ahead of teammate Latimer (10:08.44). Douglas Fredericks had a sixth place finish with a time of 11:08.51.
First place finishes continued for the Monarchs in the 100 back and the 100 breast. Mikael Ramkvist swam to a first place finish in a time of 52.88 in the 100 back with Wesley Murai claiming third in thee vent (53.29) with Austin Brett taking sixth (58.74). Joshua Kinas' first top finish came in the 100 breast. He took first as the only member of the heat to finish under a minute in 59 seconds flat. Johan Lundberg placed second in the 100 breast (1:01.69) and Corey Siga hit the wall with a fourth place time (1:03.96).
Latimer, who took second in the 1000 free, came back to take first in the 200 fly in a time of 1:57.44. Daniel Gallagher placed third (1:59.70), Richard Hagy came in sixth (2:08.22) and Douglas Frederick finished eighth (2:15.77).
Patrik Balint swam his way to a top finish in the 200 back and a new McCarthy Pool record. Balint, in a time of 1:52.48, took first followed by teammate Mikael Ramkvist in second in a time of 1:54.17. Daniel Gallagher placed fourth (1:59.87) and Austin Brett came in eighth (2:07.57).
Joshua Kinas' second top placement came with the 200 breast in a time of 2:10.04. Richard Hagy took second in the event four second behind his teammate with a time of 2:14.64. Corey Siga finished fourth with a time of 2:21.78.
Kinas' third top finish came in the 200 IM in a time of 1:58.39, the only participant with a time under two minutes. Daniel Gallagher swam to a fifth place finish (2:03.91), while Richard Hagy (2:06.85) and Corey Siga (2:09.04) finished seventh and eighth respectively.
Kristofer Hagg, who won the 200 free, also added the 500 free to the Monarchs top finshes. Hagg captured the event by hitting the wall in a time of 4:48.82. Chris Plummer finished behind Hagg in second in a time of 4:55.92, while Douglas Fredericks came in sixth (5:25.55).
Noah Scully took home first place finishes in the 1 meter and 3 meter. In the 1 meter, the Monarchs took first through third. Scully won the event with a score of 285.45, with Peter Stickl earning second with a score of 223.80, and Brian Ertter notching third with a 213.50. David Skourka placed sixth with a 151.10. In the 3 meter, Scully won the event with a score of 279.10. Ertter faired better in the event, placing behind Scully in second with a score of 221.35. Stickl took fourth with a 167.30.
The Lady Monarchs captured several first place finishes highlighted by
Kress along with her 400 free medley relay teammates April Barrientos, Jennifer Sargent, and Kelli North hit the wall first in their time of 3:59.15 for a new record at McCarthy Pool.
In other relay events, the 400 free relay squad of Diana Hurst, Kelli North, Caroline Larsson and Elizavet Moiseeve took home second place in a time of 3:42.03.
Barrientos added a first place finish in the 100 back in addition to her top finish with 400 free relay team. Barrientos was the only swimmer to finish under a minute with her time of 59.87. Other Lady Monarchs in the 100 back included Megan Gill in ninth (1:05.87), Jordan Ephraim in 10th (1:07.68), and Lindsay Smith in 12th (1:11.48).
The 100 back was not the only first place finish for Barrientos as she also captured the 200 back in a time of 2:11.62. Teammates Megan Gill placed eighth (2:18.99) and Kendra Hogg came in 11th (2:29.18).
Jennifer Sargent was another Lady Monarchs among the day's first place finishers. Her time of 2:28.88 gave her the top spot in the 200 breast. Kelley Sayers finished two seconds behind her teammate to place third, while Lauren Fiskus (2:32.02) and Alysson Nold (2:33.10) swam to fifth and sixth place finishes respectively.
Sargent also captured the 100 breast in a time of 1:08.79 as the Lady Monarchs took three of the top four places in the event. Kelley Sayers placed third (1:09.62), followed by Alysson Nold in fourth (1:10.15). Lauren Fishkus took eighth with a time of 1:11.98.
The Lady Monarchs packed a one-two punch in the 500 free. Caroline Larsson finished way ahead of the competition (5:06.11), over eight seconds fasters than her teammate Kelli North (5:14.41) who came in second. Diana Hurst finished the event in seventh (5:20.95), followed by Emily Smidlein in eighth (5:22.35).
Caroline Larsson earned her first individual top finish as a Lady Monarch in the 200 IM. Larsson raced to a time of 2:12.00 beating out second place by nearly a minute. Jennifer Sargent came in sixth place (2:18.52) in the event with Megan Gill finishing in nith (2:19.55).
Larsson also earned second place as the top ODU swimmer in the 200 free (1:56.79). Other Lady Monarch finishers included Kelli North (1:58.22) and Elizaveta Moiseeva (1:58.77) at fourth and fifth respectively along with an 11th place time (2:03.20) for Emily Smidlein.
Diana Hurst placed second in the 1000 free (10:43.71) and Kenda Hogg finished fourth (10:56.01).
Other finishers for the Lady Monarchs included included Lauren Johnson in 8th (56.68), Elizaveta Moiseeva (56.79), and Lindsey Smith with an 11th place finish (58.39) in the 100 free and Christina Gianni in seventh (1:02.28), April Barrientos in eighth (1:02.79), and Jordan Ephraim in 11th (1:04.94) in the 100 fly. Additionally in the 50 free, Lauren Johnson finished ninth (26.32) followed by Elizaveta Moiseeve in 10th (26:46), and Lindsay Smith in 11th (26.89).
Jasmine Moore dove her way to a top finish in the 1 meter and captured second in the 3 meter. Moore scored a 206.20 for a first place finish in the 1 meter. While Georgetown's Caitlin Karniksi took home the 3 meter event with a score of 248.75, Moore took second with a score of 207.40.
Lauren Kruer finished sixth in the 1 meter event with a score of 153.00 and teammate CJ Pzisgran placed eight with a 100.35. In the 3 meter, Kruer took fifth with a 153.50.
The Monarch and Lady Monarch swimmer and divers return to action next Saturday, October 20th at Towson.
