HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Lady Monarchs stood tall against the No. 30 Dukes of James Madison (12-1-1, 5-0-1) for nearly the entire game on Sunday. ODU pulled ahead of JMU with under 20 minutes to play on freshman Kelsey Williams' second goal of the afternoon, but the Dukes would answer with three goals in the final 15 minutes to win. The Lady Monarchs drop to 6-4-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the CAA.
The Dukes would strike first in the game, in just the 7th minute of play. Junior Kimmy Germain would score her second goal of the season on an assist by Teresa Rynier. It was one of seven shots on goal in the first half, but the only to get past ODU keeper Lauren Tupman. Tupman had eight saves in the game, with six in the first half.
ODU would answer in the 37th minute on Kelsey Williams first career goal. Jenni Purdum and Ashley Kukura would set up the goal as Williams knocked it home five yards out. It was Kukura's second assist of the weekend and fourth on the season, and Purdum's first of the season.
The freshman forward would give ODU the lead at the 70:09 mark on an unassisted goal from under 10 yards out. She scored on two of her three shots in the game. With the goal, ODU led 2-1 with under 20 minutes to play and one of the best second half defenses in the conference. ODU came into the game allowing under five shots per game in the second half.
The defense was as good as advertised for the first 75 minutes of the match, but things came unglued in the final 15. Rookie sensation Cate Tisinger would knock away a hat trick in the final 15 minutes. Her first was the equalizer in the 76th minute off assists from Annie Lowry and Corky Julien. Lowry's pass to Julien drew Tupman out and Julien passed to Tisinger for the four yard shot.
JMU kept pressing and Tisinger would score the game winner off the second assist for both Rynier and Julien. Her goal would glance off the right post and into the goal in the 87th minute of play. With under three minutes to play, Tisinger would add the third goal on an unassisted shot into an empty net on a breakaway.
The Dukes would remain undefeated at home thanks to three goals in the final 14:03 by the rookie, who's three goals tie her for the team lead with seven.
JMU outshot ODU 19-11 in the game. Tupman would save eight while allowing all four goals and the Dukes keeper saved three and allowed two goals.
The team returns home for a pair of pivotal conference games against George Mason and Towson next weekend. Kick-off against the Patriots is set for Friday, October 19 at 7:00 pm.
