Norfolk, Va. - Although their first game is nearly two years away, the Old Dominion University football Monarchs unveiled their uniforms today during the Kickoff Countdown Tailgate Party at Town Point Park. Manufactured by Nike, the uniforms are light weight but durable, offer added ventilation and have a shrink-wrapped fit that minimizes grab points for opponents to hold on to.
The Monarchs will primarily wear slate blue jerseys and slate blue pants at home and all white on the road, although they will also have a silver variation of the uniform. The design was created to allow for mixing-and-matching of the different jerseys and pants, giving ODU nine possible variations of the uniform on game day.
"As we begin football at ODU we're committed to having the very best of everything," added head coach Bobby Wilder. "This includes facilities, coaches and players, and these uniforms are just another reflection of that commitment. We worked with Nike to design a uniform that not only looks great, but will allow our players to have optimum comfort. I also like that fact that with nine possible combinations, we can have a new look nearly every Saturday."
The jerseys have a secondary color insert on the chest and back, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) logo on the right chest, the Nike logo on the left chest and the horizontal ODU logo on the neck home plate. Tackle twill numbers appear on the front, back and sleeves of the jersey. The pants have a two-color insert down both legs, the Monarch logo on the rear of the waistband and the Nike logo on the right hip.
The Monarchs' helmets are silver with slate blue facemasks and feature the same horizontal ODU logo found on the jersey, on each side. Miniature versions of the Monarch helmet are now on sale and can be purchased at the ODU Bookstore or online at ODUSports.com.
