NORFOLK, Va. -- The No. 13/11 Old Dominion field hockey team made it six-in-a-row with a 4-0 shutout over Hofstra in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action at Foreman Field on Saturday afternoon.
Four different Lady Monarchs scored in the victory with sophomore Hanna Warren (Green Lane, Pa.) capturing her first goal of the season and fellow classmate Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, Pa.) putting away her team-leading fifth goal of the year. The Lady Monarchs led 1-0 at the half and found the back of the Hofstra cage three more times in the second half.
The victory improves Old Dominion to 7-5 overall and a 4-0 in the CAA. The Pride meanwhile fell to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in league play in their second straight loss.
Freshman Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.) captured her fourth goal of the season on what would be her second career game-winning goal in the game's 14th minute of play. Shea passed the ball from the top of the circle to Hatch in front of the goal catching Pride netminder Nadine Surak off balance for the tally.
Ten minutes into the second half, Old Dominion collected their second goal of the game. Sophomore Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.) had a shot on goal, but her shot was saved by defender Katy Vitolo. Warren was in the right place to get her stick on the ball following the defensive save to find the back of the cage for the 2-0 ODU lead.
Shea registered the Lady Monarchs' third goal of the afternoon at the 53 minute mark as Old Dominion capitalized once again on a rebound. ODU's Anna Kern (Va. Beach, Va.) fired upon the Pride goal, but her shot was saved by Pride keeper Surak. The ball came to Shea who immediately fired into the goal.
Old Dominion's fourth goal came as time was winding down in the game. On the Lady Monarchs' final penalty corner attempt of the day in the game's final minute, junior Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.) had her shot blocked by the Hofstra defense but the ball came right back to her for another shot on goal. This time the ball sailed into the goal for the 4-0 ODU victory.
Old Dominion outshot Hofstra 22-3 and outcornered the Pride 11-1. Junior Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) needed to make only save save in her fifth shutout of the year. The Pride meanwhile had eight saves, six by Surak and defensive saves by Vitolo and Shannon Alexander.
Old Dominion returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, October 7th when they host Drexel at Foreman Field. The Dragons are receiving votes in the latest STX/NFHCA Poll. Game time is 1:00 p.m. and admission is free.
