ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Junior Bobby Noonan qualified for the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship with a fifth place finish at the Navy Laser Open on Saturday. Two other Monarch sailors, sophomore Kevin Shockey (7th) and senior Michael Collins (10th), finished in the top ten making ODU one of just two teams with three sailors among the top ten. Noonan qualifies with 87 points on Saturday and will sail for the conference championship September 29-30 being held at the Naval Academy.
Noonan's day included four wins and eight top six finishes in the 14 races. The other four sailors that qualified for the MAISA Championship were regatta winner Hoya sailor Charlie Buckingham, St. Mary's Alex Steele, Navy's Royce Weber, and Hobart College's Jay Mills.
Shockey finished in 7th place at the regatta and finished among the top six in six of 14 races. He finished with 101 points, just five points behind 6th place sailor Michael Menninger (St. Mary's).
Collins finished in 10th place by finishing among the top 10 sailors in 10 of 14 races, including a regatta high third place finish late in the day.
