TOWSON, Md. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team collected its fourth straight victory and posted its second straight shutout as they defeated the Towson Tigers, 4-0, at Villa Julie College Field in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Monarchs improve to .500 on the season in the win, improving to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the CAA. Towson meanwhile falls to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Old Dominion struck eight minutes into the contest en-route to a 3-0 halftime lead. Sophomore Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.) became the first of four Lady Monarchs to reach the back of the Towson cage as she collected her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Fellow sophomores Anna Kern (Va. Beach, Va.) and Titia Beek (Heiloo, Holland) rounded out the first half scoring with goals late in the opening stanza. Rookie Amanda Bieber (Elizabethtown, Pa.) registered her first collegiate assists on Kern's goal in the 24th minute. Junior Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.) was credited with the assist on Beek's goal in the 31st minute of action.
The Lady Monarchs posted one goal in the second half off a penalty corner attempt. Striker Smither recorded her third goal of the year on the assists from senior Jo Ann van Aswegen (Bloemfontien, South Africa) on the insert and Beek on the stick stop.
Old Dominion outshot the Tigers 20-6 and held an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners.
In goal, Old Dominion keeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) recorded her third shutout of the season and 15th of her career by making one stop. Towson's Michelle Cheek started the game, allowed all four Lady Monarch goals, and made two saves in the cage. The Tigers' Whitney Clugston played the final 20 minutes of the game also posting two saves.
Old Dominion returns to action on Sunday, September 30th when they travel to Newark, Delaware and take on No. 18 Delaware at Rullo Stadium. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
