Norfolk, Va. - The Old Dominion University men's tennis team closed out the final day of the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational by winning the doubles championship over the University of Mary Washington.
The Monarch duo of Alex Funkhouser and Yakov Diskin began the day with an 8-5 semifinal victory Norfolk State's team comprised of Vassil Zahariev and Bogdan Yordanov. The Mary Washington tandem of Randy Loden and Kaz Murata awaited the Monarchs in the finals, but they were no match for Funkhouser and Diskin who cruised to an 8-3 victory.
In Flight A singles action a pair of Monarchs squared off in one semifinal and Rodrigo Souza got the best of teammate Dan Couzens, 6-3, 6-4. However, Souza could not edge Drexel's Omar Laalej who won the final in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
