Norfolk, Va. - The Monarchs of Old Dominion put forth a strong effort during Day 2 of the Hampton Roads Invitational tennis tournament as they sent three players and a doubles team to the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
In the Flight A singles bracket, Rodrigo Souza defeated the University of Mary Washington's Jason Dunn 7-6 (5), 6-3 to move on to the semifinals where he would await one of two possible ODU teammates. Fellow Monarchs Dan Couzens and Yakov Diskin faced off on the opposite side of the bracket with Couzens earning the straight set victory 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles action Alex Funkhouser and Diskin posted a mark of 2-0 on the day, advancing to the quarterfinals. The Monarch tandem defeated the team of Trojan and Pena from Liberty 8-6 in the first round and Christopher Newport's duo of Braig and Sison 8-2 I the second round. Up next for the ODU doubles team will be a quarterfinal matchup with another Liberty tandem of Simpson and Steyn.
