NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion (2-3-1) was solid defensively all over the field in the STIHL Soccer Classic finale as they only allowed Temple University (2-3-1) to take one shot the entire game. The Monarchs took 20 in the match, and found the back of the net in the 51st minute. Freshman Stig Haddal knocked it home for his first career goal. Haddal and junior Trevor Banks were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Owls were able to hold off the Monarchs in the first half, even though ODU was awarded a penalty kick in the 41st minute. Banks would take the kick, but 6-6 goalkeeper Trevor Lyman made one of his eight saves to deny the Monarchs the score.
Just out of the locker room at halftime, though, ODU would have better luck. ODU goalie Evan Newton cleared the ball to the feet of freshman T.J. Beaulieu who would take one touch and then pass the ball through the middle of the field to Haddal. Haddal took two touches and let loose into the back of the net for the game winner at the 50:50 mark.
The Monarchs would continue to pressure the Temple defense, taking 20 shots in the game, nine on-goal. The Owls offense could not seem to get clicking as they were called offsides ten times during the match.
A combined 30 fouls were called in the game with five yellow cards being issued. The win sealed third place in the STIHL Soccer Classic as ODU improved their record to 2-3-1.
In the first game of the day, Dartmouth College (3-1-1) claimed the Queen's Cup as they defeated William & Mary, 2-1. The Big Green would score once in each half and hold William & Mary (2-3) to just seven shots in the game to earn the win.
Dartmouth would jump to an early lead, just 3:08 into the game as Mike Ordonez found Andrew Olsen for the goal.
The Tribe would answer in the 30th minute as Nathaniel Baako played a through ball to Alan Koger. Koger would score the goal on the only shot William & Mary took in the first half to even the game at 1-1.
William & Mary stepped up the offensive tempo in the second half, but could not find the net on their six shots. It was in the 68th minute when the Big Green's Craig Henderson found the twine off an assist from Olsen for the game-winner.
Dartmouth outshot the Tribe 10-7 in the game.
The 32nd Annual STIHL Soccer Classic ended with Dartmouth taking home the championship, William & Mary earning second place with a +1 goal differential, Old Dominion in third and Temple in fourth place.
Old Dominion returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 19 at No. 7 Maryland. Kick-off is set for 7:30. It will be the fourth ranked team ODU has played in its first seven games.
