Williamsburg, Va. - Old Dominion senior Barbara Costa advanced to the semifinals of the Flight C singles bracket at the 2007 William & Mary Invitational on Friday afternoon. She'll face the Tribe's Lauren Sabacinski tomorrow at 4 p.m. for a chance to play in the finals.
Costa opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alina Sullivan of Boston College, and in the quarterfinals she made easy work of Richmond's Kelly Tidwell with another straight set victory (6-2, 6-4).
In other opening round action, fellow Lady Monarch Charleen Haarhoff dominated the No. 3 seeded and the 46th ranked player in the country, Katarina Zoricic of William & Mary 6-1, 6-2. However, in the quarterfinals of the Flight A bracket Haarhoff struggled in a 6-2, 6-0 loss at the hands of Penn's Ekaterina Kosminskaya.
Jana Kubickova, Daniela Cohen and Marija Citic also participated for the Lady Monarchs on Friday, however, neither could secure an opening round or consolation round victory.
In doubles play the duo of Costa and Cohen advanced to the Flight B quarterfinals following their 8-4 win over the team of Kebler and Milosavljevic from Michigan State. The Lady Monarchs' top doubles squad consisting of Haarhoff and Kubickova fell 8-5 to the top seeded tandem of Airapetian and Franco from Arkansas.
