Norfolk, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's tennis team will kickoff its 2007-08 season tomorrow when the Lady Monarchs compete in the 15th annual William & Mary Invitational. This year's field includes 13 other programs from throughout the country, 87 singles players and 40 doubles teams. A total of 13 nationally ranked singles players are participating this weekend, 12 of which are competing in the top singles bracket, Flight A.
The Lady Monarchs return five letterwinners from last year's team that posted a mark of 18-7 overall and 6-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament. Leading the way for ODU is junior Charleen Haarhoff, a second team All-CAA selection last year in both singles and doubles who will be competing in the Flight A singles bracket. Ranked as high as No. 93 during the season, Haarhoff posted a singles record of 26-13, playing primarily at No. 1 and a doubles mark of 18-11. She advanced to the quarterfinals of last year's William & Mary Invitational.
ODU will have four other players participating in the Invitational which will begin Friday morning at 10:15 a.m. at various sites throughout Williamsburg. Jana Kubickova (Flight B), Barbara Costa (Flight C), Daniela Cohen (Flight D) and Marija Citic (Flight E) will take on the field in the singles competition, and the doubles teams of Haarhoff/Kubickova (Flight A) and Cohen/Costa (Flight B) will also compete.
