NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team got into the win column for the first time in the 2007 season as the sixth-ranked Lady Monarchs defeated eighth-ranked Virginia, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Foreman Field.
Sophomore Titia Beek (Heiloo, Holland) led the way with two goals and an assist as the Lady Monarchs snap a two-game losing streak. The win moves Old Dominion to 1-2 on the season as they head out on the road for their next four games. The Cavaliers meanwhile fall to 1-2 overall.
The Cavaliers struck first as leading scorer Traci Ragukas found her way into the back of the ODU cage on a penalty corner 15 minutes into the game. Virginia would go on to outcorner Old Dominion, 17-2, but it would be the lone time the Cavaliers would convert.
With just over five minutes remaining in the first half, Old Dominion tied the game at one apiece. Junior Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.) struck the ball into the Cavalier cage in the Lady Monarchs' lone penalty corner attempt of the half. Senior Jo Ann van Aswegen (Bloemfountien, South Africa) and Beek were credited with the assists.
Less than two minutes later, the Lady Monarchs made their way back into the circle where Beek would put Old Dominion ahead 2-1 heading into halftime.
Beek added in her second tally of the afternoon eight minutes into the second half.
Junior Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) held off the Virginia barrage of shots with 11 saves in net. Amy Desjadon made two stops for the Cavaliers.
The Lady Monarchs hit the road for their next four games. The Old Dominion field hockey team returns to action on Friday, September 7th at Michigan and then take on Connecticut in a neutral site contest in Ann Arbor on Saturday, September 8th.
