CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Old Dominion men's soccer team stretched one of the top teams in the nation to double overtime on Friday night, before falling 2-1 to the No. 3 Demon Deacons of Wake Forest University (1-0). It was the first game of the 2007 season for ODU (0-1) as they are playing in the Carolina Nike Classic on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. Sophomore Ambane Emmanuel (Yaounde, Cameroon) knocked home a goal in the first half for the Monarchs off an assist by junior newcomer Daniel Haywood (Spaldwick, England).

The Deacons got out in front in the first half off a touch into the back of the net by Corben Bone at the 25:52 mark. His goal was assisted by Lyle Adams and Zack Schilawski.

Just eight minutes later, Emmanuel connected with the upper right pocket off the dish from Haywood. The goal at 33:51 was the sophomore's fourth goal as a Monarch and first of the season.

The match was scoreless for the rest of the first, the entire second half and the first overtime. Freshman T.J. Beaulieu was handed the first yellow card of his career in the 60th minute. It wasn't until the 107th minute, just 3:45 remaining on the clock that the third ranked Deacons would finish off the Monarchs.

Bone took a shot on ODU star goalkeeper Evan Newton and he made his sixth save of the match. He couldn't corral it however, and Evan Brown came in with a shot off the rebound for the game-winner. Newton allowed two goals and saved six in 106:15 minutes of play.

The Wake Forest goalkeeper, Brian Edwards, collected two saves while allowing just the one goal.

The Monarchs took seven shots, three coming off the foot of Emmanuel. Wake Forest took 13 shots including eight on goal.

ODU returns to the pitch on Sunday as part of the finale to the Carolina Nike Classic as they face off against No. 16 North Carolina.
