NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion became the first team to score on the top-ranked Maryland field hockey team, but the sixth-ranked Lady Monarchs fell to the two-time defending national champions, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at Foreman Field.

The Terps remain undefeated at 3-0, while the Lady Monarchs drop to 0-2.

At the half, Maryland led 2-0. The Terps struck early for their first goal. Katie O'Donnell fed the ball into the circle from the top to Nicole Muracco nearly five minutes into the contest for the 1-0 Maryland lead. O'Donnell would score the Terps' second goal in the 22nd minute of action. The Terps' Susie Rowe had a high pass that hit the crossbar of the ODU cage causing the ball to drop in front of the goal. O'Donnell was positioned perfectly to tap the ball into an open cage.

Preseason CAA Player of the Year Jo Ann van Aswegen (Bloemfoutien, South Africa) got the Lady Monarchs onto the board in the second half. With Old Dominion awarded a penalty corner, van Aswegen inserted the ball to sophomore Titia Beek (Heiloo, Holland) for the stop. Once Beek had control of the ball, she passed it right back to van Aswegen along the left side of the Terp cage to find the gap, put the ball in, and cut the ODU deficit to one with 22:11 left in the game.

Maryland struck twice in the game's final eight minutes, adding to their lead. O'Donnell added in her second tally of the evening. After her first shot was saved, she managed to collect the rebound and fire off another shot, this time reaching the back of the goal. The Terps' Ameliet Rischen added in another insurance goal four minutes later.

Old Dominion was outshot, 16-4, and outcornered, 6-2. In net, junior Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) stopped six shots, while her counterpart Kathryn Masson recorded two saves.

The Terps and Lady Monarchs will meet again this season when Old Dominion travels to College Park, Maryland on Friday, October 12th.

The ODU field hockey team returns to action on Sunday, September 2nd when they host No. 8 Virginia at 1:00 p.m. Admission to Foreman Field is free.
