CAPE MAY, NJ -- Kyle Rogachenko, rising Old Dominion sophomore, continued his success in singlehanded sailing last week with a win in the U.S. Singlehanded Sailing Championship. He placed first among 24 sailors at the championship as he added to his already impressive resume. Last August, he became the first American to win the Laser Radial Youth Worlds Championships. The field at the championship was filled with sailors aging from 16 to 69, all with experience in national and world sailing events.
Rogachenko was in first after seven races through Friday, and the race committee was unable to get any races off on Saturday, announcing the Pennsylvania native as the winner. Rogachenko won with a low score of 25, with current Harvard sailor Clay Johnson coming in just one point shy of Rogachenko with 26.
The 19-year old skipper will return to ODU this fall with his sights set on an ICSA National Championship to add to his already crowded trophy case. Also entered in the event was ODU freshman John Shockey. Shockey finished 23rd.
