RICHMOND, VA--Old Dominion University junior golfer Stan Guerrero(Tijuana, Mexico) and senior tennis player Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil)are two of ten student-athletes who were honored by the Colonial Athletic Associationas recipients of the CAA Scholar-Athlete Award for the spring sports season. All 10winners had an overall grade point average over 3.25.
Stan Guerrero, the CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's golf tied for the team best stroke average of 72.7 during the year. He was the Monarchs top performer in four tournaments this season. Guerrero tied for second at the Raines tournament, tied for fifth at Mission Inn, and sixth at the CAA Championships. He was the team MVP and earned first team All-CAA honors. Guerrero ranked 10th nationally in par-5 scoring as he helped lead the Monarchs to the CAA Championship and an atlarge berth in the NCAA East Regionals. A finance major, Guerrero was selected to the 2006 Arthur Ashe Jr., National Scholar Team.
Henrique Cancado, the CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's tennis waschosen to the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District first team. The information technology major is a Dean's List student and a four-time CAA Commissioner's Academic Award honoree. On the court, Cancado earned first-team All-CAA accolades in singles and doubles. He ranked No. 55 nationally in singles aftercompiling a 33-11 record at the number two position. In doubles, he and partner HarelSrugo went 27-8 and were ranked 15th in Division I. Cancado helped lead ODU to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the first appearance in school history and wasalso selected to the NCAA singles and Doubles Championships.
In all, ODU had four student-athletes earn CAA Scholar Athletes of the Year honors. Earlier this year, Dana Sensenig of field hockey and Jonathan Adams of men'sbasketball received this honor.
