NORFOLK, VA--Sophomore righthander Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC.) tossed a complete game five-hit shutout as Old Dominion (29-19) defeatedCrosstown rival Norfolk State (21-22), 3-0 at NSU's Marty Miller field.
It was Carter's first collegiate complete game as he fanned ten with justtwo walks. Carter game up a lead-off single to Charles LeLane in the bottomof the first, then held the Spartans hitless until Juan Serrano singled in theseventh. Carter is now 2-4 on the year, with his other win over Maryland.
In the ODU fourth inning Mike Zahm and Jake McAloose walked and DavidBurns doubled home Zahm for a 1-0 lead. In the eighth Burns scored with twoOut on a Tyler Belcher single to make it 2-0. In the ninth Nick Erdman drewThe fourth straight two-out walk from NSU pitchers to force in Mike Zahmfor ODU's final score.
Chris Keenan, Mike Zahm, and David Burns each had two hits on the night.NSU pitchers fanned 12 Monarchs, but also walked nine. Jake McAlooseand Nick Erdman walked three times each.
NSU was led by Charles Lalane and Juan Serrano with two hits each.The Spartans threatened in the ninth as Lelane led off with a single, SerranoSingled with one out and Jerrod Farley walked with two outs, but Carterfanned Rocco Savage to end the game and give ODU its fifth shutout ofthe year.
ODU returns to action this weekend with a three-game CAA series againstGeorgia State at home, beginning Friday night at 7 p.m.
