Delaware Elminates ODU Behind McGuire's Pitching

WILMINGTON, NC--The University of Delaware defeated Old Dominion 4-0, in the elimination game in the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball tournament Saturday evening. Delaware righthander Mike McQuire tossed a one-hitter which advances the Blue Hens to Saturday's final against Virginia Commonwealth. ODU lost to VCU earlier in the day, 9-4.

McGuire held ODU hitless until the ninth until freshman Jake McAloose singled with One out. McGuire fanned seven and walked three on the night. Delaware grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second thanks to an ODU wild pitch and a throwing error along with a sacrifice fly by Bryan Menchaca. The Blue Hens scored their fourth an final run in thethird on a wild pitch. Dexter Carter fanned five with four runs in six innings of work for ODU.

In the earlier game against VCU, John Leonard knocked in five runs on a two-run double In the second and a three-run homer in the ninth.Nick Erdman hit a two run homer for ODU in the second with David Burns aboard. Gerard Hall singled home Anthony Shawler to make it 5-3. The Monarchs final run Came in the third as Tyler Belcher singled home David Burns. Shawler and Hall led ODU with two hits on the day. Junior RyanBergh pitched 8.1 innings of work and only three of the runs were earned.

Mike Zahm finished the season as ODU's top hitter with a .371 batting average with 60 runs scored, 61 RBI, along with seven homers and 23 doubles. David Burns hit eight homers with 61 RBI, while Tyler Belcher led the team with 24 doubles, just three shy Of the school record. Anthony Shawler led ODU with five triples and Jake McAlooseled the team with ten sacrifice hits to go along with his .305 batting average. ODU hit .296 as a team.

On the mound, the Monarchs staff compiled a CAA best 3.97 ERA as Anthony Shawler Posted an 11-2 mark with a 2.20 ERA. He fanned 130 batters in 114.2 innings of work and eight complete games with three shutouts. Dan Hudson followed with an 8-5 record and a 3.46 ERA. He fanned 109 batters in 106 innings of work.
