ODU Defeats UNCW, 13-3 In CAA Tournament Play

WILMINGTON, NC--Old Dominion (35-22) remained in the winners bracket of the CAA Baseball Championships with a 13-3 victory over defending CAA Champion UNC Wilmington (29-27). Sophomore righthander Dan Hudson (8-5/Virginia Beach, VA.-Princess Anne, HS) scattered seven hits for the complete game victory. The top seeded Monarchs will play VCU, a 10-6 winner over Delaware, Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Hudson tossed his second complete game of the season, allowing three runs, (one earned) fanning five and walked only two batters. Helowered his ERA to 3.46 with 109 strikeouts in 106.2 innings of work.

With UNCW leading 2-1 in the fifth, Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.-Great Bridge HS) tripled in Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.)with two outs to tie the game. In the sixth Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA. )singled home Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, VA. and Tyler Belcher (Bristol, VA.)followed with an RBI double to scored David Burns and Gerard Hall finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Shawler and give the Monarchs a 5-2 lead. Senior outfielder Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE) then started another three-run Monarch inning in the seventh with a leadoff solo homer in the seventh.

Tyler Belcher led the ODU 13-hit parade with three hits on the day, including two doubles and three runs batted in. Mike Zahm, David Burns (Jacksonville, FL.) and Anthony Shawler each had two hits while Keenan and Shawler knocked in two runs.

Grayson Evans, Mark Carver and Jes Snyder each had two hits for UNCW. The Monarchs won all four games against the Seahawks, sweeping the three game regular season series as well as today's tournament game.

The winner of Friday's game advances to the title game on Saturday. The loser must play again Friday night against the Delaware/George Mason winner.George Mason eliminated Georgia State.
