KINGS POINT, NY -- The Old Dominion co-ed dinghy team sailed to a fifth place finish at the America Trophy over the weekend. The regatta is the MAISA qualifier for the national championship with the top four teams receiving bids and ODU just missed by finishing 25 points behind fourth place. Junior Bobby Noonan skippered the A division boat to fourth place while freshman Kyle Rogachenko was the skipper of B division finishing in 6th place.
MAISA will be represented in the national championship by Georgetown, St. Mary's, Navy and Hobart & William Smith. Georgetown won the regatta with 155 points in 18 races.
The Monarchs two boats combined for 27 top seven finishes including two victories in each division. Noonan combined with a crew of freshman Wilson Stout and senior Ryan Kozoriz for the fourth place effort. The A division boat finished out of the top ten only twice in 18 races. Rogachenko sailed with sophomore Alissa Ayres and freshman Mike Komar as the B division boat finished strong on Sunday by crossing the line among the top six in the final six races.
ODU tallied 221 points for fifth place. The national championship will be held in Annapolis, Maryland at the United States Naval Academy on May 30-June 1.

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Saturday: Postponed due to no wind until 1pm. Racing started in aSouthwest Breeze at 4-8 knots increasing, shifting right to theNortheast and then subsiding to end the day with adverse current in thesouthwest and a cross current in the NE breeze. A sailed in 420's, B inFJ's. Races were windward leeward twice around with a gate and were asolid 20-24 minutes each. One breakdown filed and disallowed. Oneprotest resulted in a DSQ. One redress disallowed, one still pending.

Sunday: Racing started promptly at 9:31am in a light Northwesterly at4-8 knots that slowly built all day but drastic changes in velocity andbig shifts. A and B switched fleets right at the start of the day.Wind increased to 15 knots for the last race in each division with thelast race starting at 3:30. Upwind/cross current built at the end ofthe day causing several general recalls and the 1 minute rule was ineffect for all starts beginning with race 16. The races again werewindward leeward twice around with a gate, and on the lengthy side at20-25 minutes. The redress from yesterday was dropped, one redressallowed for scoring, one protest resulted in a RAF. Zero breakdowns.
