NORFOLK, VA-- The Old Dominion University Monarchs defeated the NorfolkTides (Baltimore Orioles AAA affiliate), 2-1 Tuesday night in the annual Bank of The Commonwealth Scholarship game at Harbor Park. A crowd of 2,282saw the Monarchs get their first win over the Tides since 1999.
ODU scored both runs without benefit of a base hit. In the first inningChris Keenan reached on an error. He eventually would score on a wild pitch by Rob Bell. The Monarchs second run came in the second inning as Cameron Scott walked, was wild pitched to second and would later score on a ground out by freshman shortstop Gerard Hall.
The Tides lone run came on a solo shot by Brandon Fahey in the first inning. The Tides pitchers threw for both teams. Tides catcher J.R. House, who caught for ODU got the Monarchs first hit in the sixth with a double, but it was senior outfielder Mike Zahm who got the Monarchs other hit in the seventh with a single.
ODU returns to CAA action this weekend in Richmond with a three-game series against VCU. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. at the Diamond.
