NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team closed out the 2007 regular season on a high note, defeating the Tribe of the College of William & Mary, 15-10, on senior day at Foreman Field. Senior midfielder Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.), who was one of the six seniors honored before the opening draw, totaled a career-high eight points tying her career mark with six goals along with two assists.
The victory improved the Lady Monarchs to .500 at 7-7 overall and 4-3 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Old Dominion will be the fourth seed at the upcoming CAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament. Site of the tournament has still yet to be determined as Friday's James Madison/Hofstra game will decided the top seed and host.
William & Mary meanwhile closes out it season 3-13 overall and 1-6 in conference action.
Jacobs was one of seven Lady Monarch scorers on the afternoon. Other multiple goal scorers included freshman Ashley Kellogg (Downingtown, Pa.)with four, a new career mark for the rookie Lady Monarch. Jacobs also added in two assists along with junior Kelly Kimener (Oakton, Va.) and senior Ashley Stanwick (Aquasco, Md.).
The Tribe was led by Emily Vitrano with three tallies and Jamie Fitzgerald with two.
Old Dominion held a 9-7 lead at the half. The Lady Monarchs scored twice within the game's opening two minutes. With Old Dominion holding on to a 3-1 advantage, William & Mary scored back-to-back goals within a 20 second span to tie the game at 3-3 at the 24:33 mark.
Another 20 seconds later, Old Dominion went back on top as Jacobs collected the first of her six goals. However, the Tribe's Emily Vitrano scored twice to give William & Mary its first lead of the game. The Tribe went ahead 5-4 with 18:41 remaining in the half.
The two teams would trade goals, but then with the Tribe ahead 6-5, Old Dominion would use a 4-0 run to gain the lead back and remain in the Lady Monarchs' favor the rest of the way. Ashley Kellogg led the four goal charge by netting the first two goals, followed by senior Katie Veneziale (Downingtown, Pa.), and freshman Nicole McMahon (Commack, N.Y.).
Old Dominion was ahead 9-6 until 22 seconds remained in the half when William & Mary managed one last score in the opening stanza. Kristen Wong found the back of the Lady Monarch net to cut the Tribe deficit to two, 9-7, entering intermission.
Although it was the Tribe netting the second half's first goal, Old Dominion followed with five unanswered goals. The Lady Monarchs would not allow William & Mary to score again until the 8:33 mark ending a 19 minute scoring drought.
Following William & Mary's Katie Rees goal at the 8:33 mark, the two team's traded goals for the final 15-10 margin.
Old Dominion outshot William & Mary 39-29, held a 15-12 edge in groundballs, and out drew the Tribe, 17-10. Veneziale led Old Dominion with a career-high eight draws along with a team-leading two caused turnovers.
Lady Monarch netminder Sara Larson (Sylvan Lake, Mich.) collected a team-high three groundballs while making 13 saves in between the pipes in the win. William & Mary's Sara Beckstead made 14 saves in the loss.
Old Dominion will have its annual alumni game on Saturday, April 28th. The Lady Monarchs will then return to action next weekend in the CAA Tournament. Stay tuned to www.odusports.com for more details as they become available.
