Lady Monarch Tennis Downs East Carolina, 6-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Old Dominion women's tennis team rebounded from Friday's 7-0 CAA loss to No. 26 Virginia Commonwealth with a 6-1 victory over East Carolina Saturday in non-conference action.

Old Dominion used a doubles sweep and five singles to improve to 15-6 overall.

Old Dominion took an early 1-0 advantage after winning all three doubles bouts. Jana Kubickova and Larissa Santos finished first at No. 2, rolling past Luiza Borges and Hannah Priest by an 8-2 margin, while Daniela Cohen and Barbara Costa knocked off Alex Smith and Brooke Walter by a similar score of 8-2 at No. 3. At No. 1, Charleen Haarhoff and Fernanda Luiz collected an 8-5 victory by downing Mireia Gol and Varinia Soler 8-5.

Haarhoff started the Monarchs off with a solo win at No. 1, cruising past Anca Dumitru 6-0, 6-1, while Cohen defeated Priest 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.

At No. 2, Luiz clinched ODU's team victory when she downed Soler 6-2, 6-4 before Costa added a 7-5, 6-0 decision over Borges at No. 5 and Kubickova outlasted Walter 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at the fourth position. Gol tallied ECU's only triumph of the afternoon by rallying past Santos 2-6, 6-3, 7-4 in a NO. 3 matchup.

The Lady Pirates will now begin preparation efforts for the four-day Conference USA Championships which will begin Thursday, April 19 in Tulsa, Okla.
