BOSTON, MA--Old Dominion (21-12/9-2) rallied for fiveruns in the seventh inning and held off a late rally in the ninth to defeatNortheastern (8-8/4-6), 7-6 in a CAA contest Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies took a 4-2 lead into the top of the fifth inning.Cameron Scott got the Monarch rally going with a one-out single. JohnMalbon followed with a walk and Gerard Hall's bunt single loaded the bases.With two outs and reliever Ryan Quigley on the mound, Mike Zahm singled to score Scott and Malbon. McAloose then walked to reload the bases. David Burns then singled in Zahm and Hall to give ODU a 6-4 lead. Tyler Belcher then singled off reliver Dan Zehr to score McAloose for a 7-4 lead.
In the top of the ninth and one out Frank Compagnone and Mike Tamsineach got RBI hits to cut the Monarchs lead to 7-6, but reliver Ross Fetterlyretired the next two batters to hold on for the win and his third save of theyear.
Sophomore righthander Anthony Shawler remains unbeaten at7-0. He fanned ten batters, walked two and only two of the four runshe allowed were earned. Shawler now leads the CAA with 75 strikeouts in 60.1innings, and his ERA is at 2.83. Jeff Thomson fanned six in six-plus inningsof work for Northeastern.
David Burns, who knocked in three runs yesterday had four RBItoday with three hits. He tripled in a run in the first, singled in arun in the sixth and singled in two runs in the seventh.
Mike Zahm had three hits and two RBI and scored three times. Zahm is now hitting .420 with 42 RBI, while Burns is hitting .346 with 45 RBI. The third and final game of the series is Sunday at 1:30.
