RICHMOND, Va. -- Sophomore Jessica Noone (Manassass, Va.) led all Lady Monarchs scorers in Thursday afternoon's 17-10 loss to No. 20 (IWLCA)/ 18 (Inside Lacrosse) Richmond.
The loss, ODU's second straight, drops the Lady Monarchs to 3-3 on the season, while the Spider improve to 6-4 overall.
Noone was one of four Lady Monarch scorers, which saw junior Kelly Kimener (Oakton, Va.), and seniors Ashley Stanwick (Aquasco, Md.) and Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.) each net two. Senior Katie Veneziale (Downingtown, Pa.) also captured two assists in the loss.
Richmond had seven different Spiders find the back of the Lady Monarch net with Allison Furstenburg and Mandy Friend recording four apiece.
The opening three minutes of the game saw the teams trade goals. Richmond raced out to a 1-0 right off the opening draw, but the Lady Monarchs would soon tie the game up. Two minutes after the Spiders' opening goal, Stanwick would tied the game at 1-1.
Unfortanuately, a mere 20 seconds later, Furstenburg would score the first of her four goals of the afternoon beginning a three goal spurt for the Spiders and giving Richmond a lead they would never relinquish.
With Richmond up 4-1, Old Dominion capitilized on back-to-back goals, first by Noone and then by Jacobs, to pull within one, 4-3, with 18:34 left in the half. However it would the closest the Lady Monarchs would get.
Twice Old Dominion managed to pull within two in the later part of the first half. Another Noone net would pull the Lady Monarchs to 6-4 with 11:05 on the clock and a Kimener net at the 9:25 mark pulled the Lady Monarchs to 7-5.
Following Kimener's goal which had cut the Lady Monarch deficit to two, Richmond put away three unanswered goals for 10-5 margin. Noone would close out the scoring in the first half a mere 10 seconds later on her third goal as Old Dominion headed into halftime down, 10-6.
Jacobs registered the second half's first goal on a free position shot, but once again Richmond managed a run, this time rattling off three straight tallies for 13-7 edge with 19:26 remaining.
Near the midway point of the second half, Old Dominion made a dent in their deficit as Stanwick captured goal number two and Noone her fourth in back-to-back ODU tallies. Noone's goal at the 13:13 mark saw ODU trail 13-9.
The Lady Monarchs would not score against until the end of the half holding the Old Dominion offense scoreless for over 11 minutes. The Spiders meanwhile cushioned their lead with four more goals. Kimener, on a free position shot, scored the game's final goal for the final 17-10 score.
Old Dominion had the advantage in groundballs, leading the category, 22-16. Jacobs scooped up a career-high seven groundballs, surpassing her previous high of six set in her sophomore campaign against three different teams.
Richmond outdrew Old Dominion, 16-13. Draw control specialist Veneziale led the way with four won.
Jacobs not only led the Lady Monarchs in groundballs, but also in caused turnovers along with classmate, Kristen Truax (Daleville, Va.). Each registered four caused turnovers.
In net, ODU's Sara Larson (Sylvan Lake, Mich.) and D'Ana Goodfellow (Hauppauge, N.Y.) combined for five saves.
The Lady Monarchs return home to Foreman Field for the first time in five games to host Virginia on Wednesday, April 4th. Game-time is set for 3:00 p.m. The Cavaliers are currently ranked fourth in both the IWLCA Poll and Inside Lacrosse Poll.
