NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team's five-match win streak came to a halt on Sunday afternoon with the Lady Monarchs suffering a 5-2 loss to No.60 UPenn at Huntington Park. The loss drops the Lady Monarchs to 11-3 overall with all three losses coming at the hands of opponents ranked in the ITA Poll.
Old Dominion kicked off play by capturing the doubles points with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) and Jana Kubickova (Napajedla, Czech Republic) combined for an 8-6 victory over Amanda Avedissan and Julia Koulbitskaya at the No. 2 spot, while Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Daniela Cohen (Raanana, Israel) took home an 8-5 win against Charlie Tansill and Yulia Rivelis at No. 3 doubles.
Although the Lady Monarchs were ahead 1-0 following the doubles point, the Quakers went on to win five of the six singles matches for the victory. Old Dominion's lone singles victory came from freshman Daniela Cohen at No. 6 singles, defeating Michelle Mitchell in a come from behind win. The first year Lady Monarch fell behind 2-6 after the first set, but won the next two by scores of 6-1 and 7-5 to claim the victory.
The Old Dominion women's tennis team returns to action next weekend at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Round-Up. The Lady Monarchs will take on Massachusetts on Friday, March 30th, Queens and Drexel on Saturday, March 31st, and Hofstra on April 1st. All matches will take place at Owl Creek in Virginia Beach.
