NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team won its fifth straight and improved its overall mark to 11-2 by blanking Georgetown, 6-0, on Friday afternoon at the courts on the campus of Christopher Newport University.
The Lady Monarchs took all six singles matches in the win as Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) at No. 2 singles cliched the ODU victory by claiming a 6-4, 6-0, victory over the Hoya's Stephanie Cohen.
Luiz was not the only Lady Monarch to not allow a Hoya opponent to registered a game in the second set. Top singles player Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) only gave up one game in her appearance against Courtney Olsen with a 6-1, 6-0 win. Additionally, Jana Kubickova (Napajedla, Czech Republic) at No. 4 singles won her first set against Georgetown's Adriann Ginn, 6-2, before blanking her in the second set, 6-0.
Other Lady Monarch victories inclued a 6-4, 7-5 win by Larissa Santos at No. 3 singles and a 6-4, 6-1 victory by Barabara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) at No. 5 singles. Daniela Cohen (Raanana, Israel) wrapped up play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in her No. 6 singles match with Shelley Murveit.
The Old Dominion women's tennis team returns to action on Tuesday, March 25th against No. 60 UPenn. The Lady Monarchs will be looking for its first victory over a ranked opponent this season after falling to Virginia Commonwealth and Maryland, who are currently No. 25 and No. 71 respectively in the ITA Poll.
