NORFOLK, VA -- Old Dominion had a chance to tie up the game on a play at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Norfolk State clinched the 2-1 victory with a relay throw from center field. ODU scattered seven hits and tied up the game in the bottom of the eighth, but relinquished the lead in the next half inning for the final tally. Gerard Hall scored the only run for ODU and David Burns had the RBI.
Dexter Carter started for ODU and gave up just one run in 5 1/3 innings. Robbie Watkins suffered the loss in three innings of relief, giving up just two hits and one run.
Three Monarchs had two base hits apiece and Nick Erdman added another in the nine-hole. Hall, Mike Zahm, and Burns had the two hits and Burns' RBI single in the eighth tied the score late.
Norfolk State used small ball to score the game-winner in the ninth. A leadoff single and sacrifice bunt, followed by another single and a fielders choice to score John Boyd III from third.
Both teams stranded 10 runners around the basepaths as ODU falls to 5-4 on the season while Norfolk State's record improves to 5-4.
The Monarchs host a three-game set against Rutgers University this weekend starting Friday at 3:00 pm. The first pitch for the Saturday and Sunday games is set for 1:00 pm.
