CONWAY, SC-- Sophomore righthander Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, Va.) fanned11 and freshman catcher Joe Velleggia (Monkton, MD.) knocked in three runs to lead the Monarchs of Old Dominion (5-2) to a 10-5 victory over the University of Pittsburgh Sunday at the IMIhotels.com/Coastal Carolina Baseball Tournament. The victory ended ODU's two-game losing streak.
Shawler improved his record to 2-0 as he went seven-plus innings striking out11 batters. Brady Burchill (Hope, ND.) pitched the final 1.2 innings with three strikeouts.
Vellegia doubled home Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, Va.) and David Burns (Jacksonville, Va.) to cap ODU's four-run fourth inning. The 6-6 230 poundcatcher then doubled home Cameron Scott (Culpper, VA.) in the eighth inning.
Tyler Belcher (Bristol, Va.) and Cameron Scott each scored twice for ODU. ThePanthers were led by Seth Button with two runs batted in along with Morgan Kieltywith two hits.
ODU returns to action Tuesday when they travel to Farmville, Va to play atLongwood at 2:30, then return home on Wednesday to play host to Norfolk State at3 p.m.
