MONARCHS SWEEP SERIES FROM UMES, 18-2(College Baseball)
NORFOLK, VA--Seniors Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE.) and Tyler Belcher (Bristol, VA.) each had four hits and knocked in three runs to lead Old Dominion (3-0) to a 18-2 victory over the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Sunday and sweep the three-game series.
The Monarchs pounded out 19 hits on the day. Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.) scored four times and had two hits, while Nick Erdman (Leola,PA.)knocked in three runs, on two hits and scored three times. Freshman shortstop Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.) had three hits and two runs batted in.
Junior righthander Ryan Bergh (Reddick, FL.) picked up the win, fanning eight in six innings. He gave up four hits and two runs. ODU led 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, then exploded for seven runs highlighted by Tyler Belcher's two-run single.
UMES scored in the fourth, Justin Hoban led off with a double, then scored on a Monarch error. Josh Dean singled home Ken Richardson in the sixth for the Hawks second run.
Through three games freshman Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, VA.)leads with a .545 batting average, while Mike Zahm is at .538 with eightruns batted in. Zahm and Tyler Belcher both lead the team in hits withseven. ODU's overall team ERA s 2.00 as Dan Hudson (Virginia Beach, VA.),Ryan Bergh and Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, Va.) picked up wins.The Monarch staff fanned 32 batters in 27 innings of work.
ODU hosts Delaware State on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
