FAIRFAX, VA -- The Old Dominion men's and women's swim/dive teams both defeated American University but fell to Army and CAA foe George Mason on Saturday. Junior Patrik Balint won two events for the Monarchs while the women were paced by sophomore breaststroker Jennifer Sargent. Sargent finished second in both breaststroke events.
The men's team defeated American 202.00-86.00 while falling to Army 206.00-91.00 and to George Mason 178.50-118.50. On the women's side, the Lady Monarchs were victorious over American 191.00-105.00 and were defeated by Army 164.00-136.00 and by George Mason 219.00-80.00.
Balint has been tearing up competition in the backstroke all season long, including breaking his own school record in the 100 last weekend against James Madison. On Saturday he touched the wall first in the 100 (53.04) and the 200 (1:53.77) and finished second in the 200 free (1:43.79).
Other top performers for the men's team included Tyler Haverty finishing second in the 50 free in 21.55 seconds and the 100 free in 46.88 seconds. Kevin Latimer finished third in the 200 fly (1:56.63) and Michael DeNise also finished third in the mile, swimming it in 16:29.90.
On the women's side, Jennifer Sargent continues to lead the Lady Monarchs with impressive performances in the breaststroke events. She finished second in both events by less than two tenths of a second. In the 100 she touched the wall in 1:07.23 and the 200 in 2:24.58.
Liza Moiseeva and BeBe Abraham finished second and fourth in the 200 free and each also finished third in another event. Moiseeva grabbed third in the 100 free (54.17) and Abraham finished third in the 50 free (25.23). Also finishing third was Lauren Cook in the 100 backstroke (1:03.12).
The men's team drop their season record to 2-6 while the women fall to 2-7. This was the final meet before the CAA Championships on February 15-18 in the same building in Fairfax, Virginia.
