NORFOLK, Va. -- Sophomore Jo Ann van Aswegen (Bloemfontein, South Africa) scored in the closing seconds of the first half to return the third-ranked Old Dominion field hockey to the win column on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over fourth-ranked Duke.
The win improves Old Dominion to 14-2 overall as the Lady Monarchs posted their ninth shutout of the season. Duke meanwhile snaps a five-game win streak as they fall to 12-4 overall.
It looked as if the Lady Monarchs and Blue Devils were going to enter the half tied at 0-0, but Old Dominion managed to get the ball into the circle in the closing seconds. As a scramble in front the the net occured, van Aswegen got her stick on the ball for a shot past Duke keeper Caitlin Williams with 23.7 seconds left in the half. Old Dominion entered the half up 1-0 and had outshot the Blue Devils, 9-4, and outcornered them, 3-2.
Neither team connected in the second half with the ball going back and forth between both ends of the field. Old Dominion took three shots in half number two while Marian Dickinson managed the lone Duke shot. No penalty corners were awarded in the second stanza.
Williams ended the afternoon with six saves, four stops coming in the first half. Redshirt freshman Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made two stops in the win for the Lady Monarchs.
The Lady Monarchs return to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action next weekend. Old Dominion hosts Northeastern on Saturday, October 21st and Hofstra on Sunday, October 22nd. Both games begin at 1:00 p.m.
