NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Five Monarchs are advancing to the quarterfinals of their respective draws after the first day of action at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newport News.
Junior Rodrigo Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) advanced in the Flight A bracket, freshman Yakov Diskin (Yorktown, Va.) in Flight B, seniors Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) and Dominic Manilla (Greenwood, Va.) in Flight C, and freshman Daniel Pabon (Virginia Beach, Va.) in Flight D.
In doubles action, the duo of Grover and Souza reached the quarterfinals of the Flight B bracket.
Souza reaches the quarterfinals after receiving a first round bye and then coming from behind to defeat Keziel Juneau of CAA rival William & Mary, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0(5). Sophomore Alex Seleznev also made a Flight A appearance but fell, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3) to Austin Longacre of CAA opponent Delaware.
In Flight B, Diskin picked up two victories with a Round of 32 win over Carlo Pangilinan of the CAA's Drexel, 6-4, 6-3, and then a Round of 16 win over Billy Heird of Longwood, 6-3, 6-2.
Grover also earned two wins in his Flight C appearance in day one. He downed Virginia Wesleyan's Jeff Zenisek, 6-2, 6-3, in the Round of 32 and then picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over George Washington's Ryan Hunter, 6-3, 6-2. Manilla also appeared in Flight C receiving a first round bye and then earning a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Longwood's Mani Barajas-Alexander.
In Flight D, Pabon also earned two wins. He defeated Winston Salem's Antentor Hinto in the Round of 32 and then defeated Govinda Avasarala of Mary Washington, 6-2, 6-2.
The two Monarch doubles team in action on day one. Manilla and Pabon fell in the Round of 16 to Eddie Glidewell and John Mook of Christopher Newport. In the Flight B bracket, Souza and Grover move onto the quarterfinals with an 8-6 win over Delaware's Andrew Blumbert and Austin Longacre.
