NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Junior Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) advanced to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles after the first day of action at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Newport News.
Costa, playing the Flight B-1 bracket in singles, opened play with a first round bye. She then defeated Camila Noldin, 6-2, 6-3, in her Round of 32 appearance.
In doubles, Costa teamed with classmate Linda Garder (Tallinn, Estonia) , in the Flight B bracket to defeat Georgetown's Steph Cohen and Kelsey Darnell in the opening round of 16.
In singles action, senior Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) and sophomore Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) halted play in the Round of 16. Haarhoff was awarded a first round bye but was defeated in the Round of 16 by CAA rival Ragini Acharya of William & Mary in a hard fought, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (8), match. Santos earned a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (5) come from behind victory over Yuri Kurashima of Temple in the Round of 32 before falling to Kristy Borza of Pittsburgh, 6-4, 6-4.
