NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 3 Old Dominion field hockey picked up its first shutout of the season in its 3-0 home opening victory over No. 19 Richmond on Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field.

Senior Darcy Pinchbeck (Suffolk, Va.) and sophomore Jo Ann van Aswegen (Bloemfontein, South Africa) both scored their first goals of the season in the win. Pinchbeck collected the game-winner while van Aswegen scored twice, including her first collegiate goal.

Old Dominion got onto the scoreboard in the game's 14th as Pinchbeck would register what would be the game-winner. Sophomore Nico van Nispen (Bilthoven, Holland) helped draw out Richmond keeper Becca Weaver a few steps directly in front of net. Van Nispen then dished the ball over to Pinchbeck along the right side of the net for an open shot at the back of the board.

Van Aswegen put the Lady Monarchs up 2-0 late in the first half in her first collegiate tally. With several ODU attackers in the circle, junior Sami McLenegan (Middletown, Pa.) managed to find van Aswegen open near the right side of the cage for the clear shot.

Van Aswegen went on to score the lone goal of the second half and final of the afternoon just over two minutes into the stanza. A swarm of Lady Monarch attackers were in the circle, but found their shot attempts blocked by Richmond defenders. After a host of attempts, the ball rolled over to van Aswegen who fired away for her second goal of the game.

Old Dominion outshot Richmond 12-4, but the Spiders did outcorner the Lady Monarchs, 5-4.

Redshirt freshman netminder Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) earned her first career shutout making two saves in the win. Sophomore defender Daphne Admiraal (Heiloo, Holland) helped preserve the shutout with a defensive save. Richmond's Weaver made all seven saves for the Spiders, while Jacki Raithel was 20:46 of action.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday when they host #20 Michigan at 2:00 p.m. on Foreman Field. Admission to the game is free.
