NORFOLK, Va. -- Three top ten opponents, five NCAA Tournament teams, and five WNIT participants along with the anticipation of Old Dominion head coach Wendy Larry's 500 career victory and 450th win at Old Dominion highlight the 2006-07 Old Dominion women's basketball schedule released on Tuesday.
"With all five CAA first team players returning from James Madison, Hofstra, Delaware, Drexel and William and Mary, our CAA schedule will be as difficult as it has ever been," remarked Larry. "A renewed contract with ACC rival Virginia to open the John Paul Jones arena in Charlottesville in addition to road games with Big 10 member Penn State and NCAA national finalist Duke at Cameron Arena will give us incredible road challenges. Our home schedule is highlighted by the return of former Lady Monarch Angela Jackson ('90) and her Chicago State team, former CAA opponent East Carolina now of Conference USA , Big East champion Rutgers and SEC champion Tennessee."
"Along with the continued challenge of the CAA schedule, we have one of the strongest non-conference schedules in recent history," add Old Dominion Director of Athletics, Dr. Jim Jarrett. "Fans will have a chance to enjoy home games with Tennessee, Kentucky, and Rutgers and our away games at Virginia, Duke, and Charlotte should be outstanding."
Old Dominion's exhibition season begins on Sunday, October 29th with the annual Blue-White Game followed by two more tune-ups with Team Concept on Wednesday, November 1st and MI Express on Tuesday, November 7th.
The 2006-07 season officially kicks off for the Lady Monarchs on Sunday, November 12th when Old Dominion travel to the University of Virginia to help the Cavaliers open up their new facility in Charlottesville, the John Paul Jones Arena. Virginia was the Lady Monarchs' opponent in 2002 helping to open ODU's homecourt, The Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The Lady Monarchs will then return home to face the first of five participants from last year's NCAA Tournament bracket. Kentucky, who made headlines last season with an upset over Tennessee and advanced to the second round of tournament action, will be Old Dominion's Homecoming opponent on Saturday, November 18th opening up a three-game home stand. Included in the home stand will also be East Carolina on Tuesday, November 21st, and Delaware State on Saturday, November 25th, which will also be a double-header as the men host Richmond on the same day.
Old Dominion will then travel to national runner-up Duke for a meeting in famed Cameron Indoor Arena on Wednesday, November 29th to close out the month of November. December will open with the seventh straight meeting with Penn State traveling to the Bryce Jordan Center in Happy Valley.
Former Lady Monarch Angela Jackson will return to alma mater on Saturday, December 9th as Chicago State comes to the Constant Center for the first ever meeting between the two teams. Jackson was a member of the Lady Monarchs in 1989 and 1990, helping the Old Dominion women's basketball team to two second round appearances in the NCAA. As a senior in 1990, she was named First Team All-Sun Belt averaging a team second best 16.6 points per game.
Following the meeting with the Cougars, its back on to the road for the Lady Monarchs once last time before the holidays. Old Dominion returns to Charlotte, who reached the second round of the WNIT last season, on December 17th and then will meet Middle Tennessee on December 19th in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
The annual match-up between Tennessee and Old Dominion will occur on December 22nd as the two teams face off for the 40th time in history. The Lady Monarchs will then have back-to-back meetings with Top 10 opponents as Rutgers rolls into the Convocation Center on Saturday, December 30th to close out the year 2006.
The Lady Monarchs ring in the New Year beginning the Colonial Athletic Association portion of its schedule. First up will be a road meeting with Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday, January 4th followed by the first CAA home game of the year against Drexel on Sunday, January 7th.
Other CAA home games on this year's schedule include Georgia State on Thursday, January 11th, Hofstra on Sunday, January 14th, Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday, January 25th, William & Mary on Sunday, January 28th, Delaware on Sunday, February 11th, Towson on Thursday, February 15th, George Mason on Thursday, February 22nd, and the home finale on Sunday, February 25th versus James Madison.
Two important home dates to keep circled on the calendar will be the William & Mary tilt on Sunday, January 28th for the annual Hoops For A Cure game and Lady Monarch alumni day and the Sunday, February 25th match-up with James Madison as Old Dominion will honor the 10th anniversary of the 1997 Final Four team.
Other CAA road contests for the 2006-07 include George Mason on Thursday, January 18th, Drexel on Sunday, January 21st, James Madison on Thursday, February 1st, Hofstra on Sunday, February 4th, Northeastern on February 8th, William & Mary on Sunday, February 18th, Georgia State on Thursday, March 1st and the final regular season game of the year on Saturday, March 3rd at UNC-Wilmington.
The Old Dominion women's basketball team returns four starters and nine letterwinners from last year's 22-9 team. Among the returnees include CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player and Second Team All-CAA honoree junior guard T.J. Jordan and Second Team All-CAA member senior forward Sherida Triggs (Norcross, Ga.). Head coach Wendy Larry enters the season holding a 497-182 overall record needing three wins to become the 23rd active and 29th overall Division I coach to reach the half century mark in victories. Currently Mississippi State's Sharon Fanning enters the 2006-07 season with 499 wins followed by Larry's 497 victories.
