NORFOLK, VA--Senior righthander Kevin Gunter (Richland, NJ.) pitched a complete game six hit shutout as #25 Old Dominion (36-8/18-4) defeated the Rams ofVirginia Commonwealth (24-20/13-9), 6-0. It was ODU's sixth shutout of the season.
Gunter fanned nine, walked only one in tossing his third complete game andsecond shutout of the season. Gunter improved his record to 6-3 (4-1 in CAA games).
Dana Arrowood(Woodbridge, VA.), led ODU with two runs batted in. He singled in Mike Zahm(Omaha, NE.) in the first and led off the four-run fourth with a solo homer down the rightfield line. Following Arroowoods homer, Justin Gregula(Washington, PA.) doubled home Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.), then Keith Hahn (Valley Stream, NY.)greeted relief pitcher Gibbs with a single which plated Patrick Nichols (Chesapeake, VA.). The Monarchs final run of that inning came as Keith Hahn stole second, went to second on the throwing error which allowed Justin Gregula to score.
Patrick Nichols put ODU up 6-0 with a solo homer, his team leading 13th of theyear. Dana Arrowood, Patrick Nichols and Justin Gregula each had two hits for ODU.
VCU was led by Sergio Miranda, and Chris Jackson who both had two hits.The Rams left eight runners on base. The two teams play Saturday at 5 p.m. which is ODU alumni day. ODU baseball Alumni will be introduced before the game.
