WILMINGTON, NC-- The Seahawks of UNC Wilmington (38-19) errupted for four runs in the top of the tenth to defeat Old Dominion (39-16), 7-3 in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament.
ODU will play Georgia State in an elimination game Thursday at 12 noon. UNCW will play VCU at 7 p.m. and James Madison will take on Northeastern at 3:30.
ODU led 3-2 going into the top of the ninth. Justin Gregula hit a solo home in the second to give ODU the lead. In the third, Mike Zahm singled home Jimmy Miles and in the fifth Mike Zahm scored on a Seahawk error.
Kevin Gunter pitched eight innings, fanning nine with one walk and two runs, but got the no-decision. Dana Arrowood came on in the ninth and gave up a leadoff singled to Kenny Smith who latered scored the tying run on a single by Chris Hatcher.
In the tenth, with All CAA reliever Dana Arrowood on the mound for ODU, Grayson Evans and Lee McLean got on with infield hits. Kenny Smith singled home Evans to give UNCW its first lead. Smith would later score
on an ODU error, then Matt Poulk singled home Mike Marbry. UNCW's final run came on a double steal as Jason Appel came home.
The loss was ODU's first extra inning defeat of the year in seven games.Allen Flood and Adam Paul shut the door on ODU the last three innings.ODU had a chance to increase its lead, but UNCW made some outstandingdefeansive plays, throwing out Arrowood at the plate in the seventh ona hit to leftfield. In the eighth, ODU put its first two runners on and Flood came in to strikeout the side.
