WILMINGTON, NC--Kenny Smith keyed a five-run rally in the bottom of thesixth as UNC WIlmington(36-17/16-11) defeated 24th ranked Old Dominion(38-12/20-7), 8-6 at Brooks field Sunday.
The loss drops ODU into a first place tie with JMU. Both are 20-7 in CAAgames.
UNCW scored a run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead.ODU rallied in the fifth with six runs to take the lead. Justin Gregulascored on a wild pitch, the Jimmy Miles singled in Anthony Shawler tomake it 3-2. After an error, Bryan Cipolla doubled to right center, scoringMike Zahm and Jimmy Miles. Patrick Nichols finished the scoring with agroundout which plated Dana Arrowood.
The Seahawks scored five in the bottom of the sixth, three were unearneddue to two Monarch errors. The big hit was a two-run single by KennySmith which made it 6-5. ODU then made two straight errors allowingthe next three runs to score.
Allen Flood pitched the last 2-plus innings in relief for UNCW, fanningtwo and allowing no hits. Zach Booker remained undefeated at 6-0.Dan Hudson fanned four for ODU, allowing 11 hits, eight runs and fiveearned runs.
Bryan Cipolla led ODU with two hits and two runs batted in, while Chris Hatcher led UNCW with three hits and two runs scored.
ODU returns to action on Tuesday night when they host ninth rankedVirginia at 6 p.m. in the Bud Metheny Complex. It will be the lasthome game for seven ODU seniors who will be honored before the game.
