WILMINGTON, NC-- Jimmy Miles doubled home Chris Keenan in the top of the11th inning and Dana Arrowood fanned a season high eight batters in three-plus innings of relief as 24th ranked Old Dominion(38-11/20-6) defeated UNC WIlmington(35-17/15-11), 6-5 Saturday.
ODU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on Bryan Cipolla's two-run double which scored Mike Zahm and Danna Arrowood. Then Patrick Nicholsslammed his team leading 14th homer to make it 4-0.
The Seahawks scored in the second as Michael Marbry singled home DanielHargave to make it 4-1. UNCW tied the game in the fifth with three runs.Kenny Smith doubled home Jonathan Batts, then Chris Hatcher singled homeLee McLean and Kenny Smith.
UNCW took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth as John Raynor led offwith a double, then scored on Michael McLean's double.
With one out in the ninth, ODU rallied when Mike Zahm doubled, the scoredon Dana Arrowood's single. In the 11th inning, Chris Keenan led off witha singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jesse Schoendienst reachedfirst on a sacrifice bunt attempt and Keenan was safe at third after beating the throw from pitcher Adam Paul. Jimmy Miles, then got his firsthit of the series, a double which scored Keenan and giving ODU the lead.
In the bottom of the 11th, Arrowood strikeout two and picked up his fifthwin of the year. Arrowood fanned a season and career high eight battersin 3.2 innings. Starter Jason Godin, the CAA's strikeout leader fanned eight, walked four, gave up ten hits and four runs. ODU is now 5-0 in extra inning games.
Mike Zahm led ODU with three hits on the day, while Jesse Schoendienst had two doubles on the evening. John Raynon led UNCW with three hits.The two teams play Sunday in the rubber match at 2 p.m.
