NORFOLK, VA--The Richmond Spiders (20-28) pounded out 13 hits to defeat#25 Old Dominion (37-10), 8-3 in a non-conference game Tuesday night. RelieverKyle Leith pitched 4.1 innings of shutout relief to pick up the win.
UR scored in the first on Cameron Brown's single which plated Joe Mahoney.ODU rallied in the third with three runs as Justin Gregula doubled home DanaArrowood. Catcher Tyler Belcher followed by singling home Bryan Cipolla and Gregula to put the Monarchs up 3-1.
The Spiders regained the lead for good with a four-spot in the top of the fourth.Matt McKenna doubled home Cameron Brown to make it 3-2, then Victor Croglio singled in McKenna to tie the game. Ben Zeskind then doubled home Ben Marshalland Croglio for a 5-3 lead.
UR added two more runs in the fifth on Croglio's double which platedHank Coogan and Vince Riggi. The Spiders final run came in the ninth on a solohomer by Alex Wotring.
ODU also had 13 hits, but left 12 men on base. Jimmy Miles, Mike Zahm,Dana Arrowood, Bryan Cipolla, Justin Gregula and Tyler Belcher each had twoHits for the Monarchs.
Both teams return to Conference play this weekend. ODU travels to UNCWilmington beginning Friday night, and Richmond hosts George Washington inan A-10 series.
