NORFOLK, VA-- The Norfolk Sports Club presented Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy,PA.) of the Lady Monarch field hockey team the Tom Scott Award. It is presented annually to the top ODU senior student athlete.
Engle helped lead the Lady Monarch field hockey squad to the ColonialAthletic Associaton championship, and the semi-finals of the NCAA national championships.
Engle was named CAA Player of the Year, and earned first team All-American honors by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. She led ODU and the CAA with 20 goals this year. Engle was selected by the ODUAlumni Association as the Female Athlete of the Year.
In the classroom, Engle is a three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic selection and was chosen to the USA TODAY All-USA College Academic team.
A music major, Engle is first violinist in the Deihn String Quartet and concertmaster of the ODU Symphony. Engle was named CAA Scholar Athleteof the Year, and is the recipient of the Jack Wilkins/James Howardco-female Scholar Athlete of the Year award. She graduated Saturday witha perfect 4.0 grade point average in music.
The award is named in the honor of school's first athletic directorTom Scott, who served at the Norfolk Division from 1930-1940.
