ODU Defeats JMU, 8-4 For 17th Straight Win

NORFOLK, VA-- The Old Dominion Monarchs (28-3/11-0)defeated the Dukes of James Madison (19-9/9-2), 8-4 Saturday behindthe pitching of junior righthander Jason Godin (Stafford, VA.). The Monarchs scoredatleast one run in each of the first five innings.

Godin (Stafford, Va.) scattered six hits and fanned ten with just two walks in eight innings of work to remain undefeated at 7-0, most in the CAA. At one stretch, Godinretired ten straight JMU batters.

Mike Zahm (Omaha, NE.), Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.) and Keith Hahn (Valley Stream, NY.) each had three hits on the day for ODU. Zahm and Dana Arrowood (Woodbridge VA.) knocked in two runs each for the Monarchs.

Zahm singled up the middle in the first to score Chris Keenan (Chesapeake,VA.), then later scored on Gregula's single. In the second, Zahm's two out single brought Keith Hahn home. In the third inning, Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) scored from third on a wild pitch.

In the ODU fourth with two outs, Zahm singled, then Dana Arrowood slammed his third homer of the season. ODU finished its scoring in the fifth as Keith Hahn doubled home Gregula, then Hahn later scored on a wild pitch.

The Dukes got on the board in the second as designated hitter Matt Sluder singled home Dan Santobianco. Firstbaseman Nate Schill singled home Michael Cowgill in the third inning to draw JMU to within one at 3-2. The Dukes scored two runs off ODU reliever Hunter Hall in the ninth. Sluder doubled home Rob Altieri who reached on an error, then Davis Stoneburner's sacrifice fly then plated Matt Bristow. JMU's Kellen Kulbacki, who leads the nation in hitting (.515) and homers(15) upped his hitting streak to 24 games.

The ODU school record for consecutive wins during one season is 21 set in 1964 by the NCAA Div. II East Regional champions. The overall school mark is 26 over two seasons of 1964 and 1965. The 1985 Sun Belt Conference champions who were 50-11 are next with 18 straight wins. ODU and JMU meet in game three on Sunday at 2 p.m.
